Rockford, IL Doctor Malpractice Lawyers
Attorneys for Winnebago County Primary Care Injury Victims
For many individuals, family doctors and primary care physicians are their first line of defense in treating illnesses and identifying serious health conditions. Most of us trust our doctors to provide competent care and take all reasonable measures to prevent us from harm. Unfortunately, this does not always occur. Primary care physicians are typically very busy and often overworked, which causes them, at times, to make critical errors. If you or a loved one has been injured due to primary care doctor malpractice, you may be entitled to compensation.
At Mannarino & Brasfield, A Division of Schwartz Injury Law, we understand the outrage patients and their families feel when they suffer injury due to receiving substandard care from a doctor they know and trust. We also know that sometimes it can be a difficult decision to file a primary care doctor malpractice claim against a physician you know personally. Our lawyers have over 20 years of experience in this area of the law, and we have a strong track record of successful results in even the most complex medical malpractice cases. We are here to help counsel you and provide skilled legal guidance during this difficult time.
Case Result: $1.75 Million Verdict Against Winnebago County Eye Doctor Who Performed Unnecessary and Damaging Surgery
Mannarino & Brasfield, A Division of Schwartz Injury Law secured a $1.75 million verdict for a 75-year-old female retiree who underwent endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) surgery on her left eye at Rockford Ambulatory Center. The doctor recommended that she undergo the new procedure despite the fact that her glaucoma was well-controlled with medication and she had 20/30 vision in that eye. It turned out that the doctor had never performed this procedure before, and his training had consisted of a one-day course that was taught by representatives of the medical device manufacturer. The surgery was botched, resulting in a catastrophic choroidal hemorrhage and total and permanent blindness in her left eye.
How Does Primary Care Doctor Malpractice Occur?
There are a number of ways physician negligence can occur at your family doctor's office or primary care clinic. Some of the most common include:
- Diagnostic Errors: Misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, or failure to diagnose a health condition can cause that condition to worsen and at times become life-threatening.
- Communication Errors: Failure to communicate adequately with nurses and other staff regarding the health condition of a patient can lead to severe and sometimes fatal errors, such as failing to follow up with a patient regarding a serious health concern.
- Failure to Refer: Some conditions require a specialist to make a proper diagnosis and/or to treat appropriately. At times, doctors fail to provide a referral, either due to a misdiagnosis or the belief that they can treat the condition themselves.
- Medication Errors: Failure to prescribe the correct medication, which can sometimes cause serious health complications.
- Use of Defective Devices: Some doctor's offices and clinics have equipment that is dangerous or defective. When a patient is injured due to a faulty or dangerous medical device, it could also become a defective products liability case against the manufacturer.
Primary care doctor malpractice cases can be complicated and challenging to pursue. Most often, there are multiple factors that contribute to the injury of a patient, and the office or clinic will do everything possible to avoid responsibility. Our team has in-depth experience with these types of cases, and we are often able to catch important (and frequently overlooked) details that point strongly to physician negligence. We also routinely call on top medical specialists who can provide expert testimony to support our findings.
