Rockford, IL Nursing Home Medication Error Injury Attorneys
Winnebago County Nursing Home Drug Mistake Lawyers
Medication errors are a growing problem in Illinois nursing homes. Many nursing facilities are understaffed, and employees are often overworked and more prone to making errors. Unfortunately, many of these errors go unreported and are not discovered until serious complications arise down the road. If you or someone close to you has suffered severe injury, illness, or wrongful death due to a nursing home medication error, you may be entitled to compensation.
For over 20 years, the skilled medical malpractice attorneys at Mannarino & Brasfield, A Division of Schwartz Injury Law have successfully represented victims of medication errors in nursing homes and medical facilities in Rockford, Chicago, and throughout Illinois. We have seen a sharp increase in medication mistakes and other types of nursing home neglect and abuse in recent years, and we believe there is no excuse for our honored elders to be mistreated this way. Our mission is to provide a strong voice for the most vulnerable in our society, so those responsible for the negligence and abuse of our elderly are held fully accountable.
Case Result: $1.4 Million Verdict for Wrongful Death Due to a Medication Error
Mannarino & Brasfield, A Division of Schwartz Injury Law secured a $1.4 million verdict for the estate of an 82-year-old man who was being treated for a possible cardiac condition. While the cardiac tests were ongoing, the patient was placed on IV Heparin. Despite the fact that the tests came back normal, and the Heparin drug was interfering with normal blood clotting, the patient was kept on the drug. This resulted in internal bleeding, multiple organ failures, and eventually, death.
Common Nursing Home Drug Mistakes in Illinois
A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study found that roughly one out of every three nursing facility patients suffers from a medication error, and the vast majority of these errors are preventable.
There are numerous ways medication is improperly administered to residents in nursing homes. Some of the most common include:
- Over or under-medicating
- Improperly mixing various medications
- Not providing enough food or water while administering medication
- Failure to properly track medications
- Patient mix-ups (e.g., giving medication to the wrong patient)
- Mislabeling medications
- Prescribing the wrong type of medication due to a misdiagnosis
- Administering a defective or dangerous medication
- Failing to take emergency measures following an adverse reaction to a medication
Because there are so many different types of medication errors which are often not discovered until some time has gone by, these types of cases can be more complicated and challenging to pursue. Our attorneys have successfully handled numerous medication error cases over the years, and we are often able to quickly uncover important (and frequently overlooked) factors that may point to negligence on the part of the nursing facility.
